Add, Edit, Delete and Rename Categories in WordPress

How to add categories in WordPress

To add a category in WordPress we have two options available the first one is available in the WordPress dashboard and you can find the categories panel in the sub-menu of the post button.

The second method is available on the ‘edit post’ page and you can find the add new category button on the right sidebar.

Because when we create or start a new blog or website then we need to add the categories and these categories links we can use in the menu bar to filter the things in our blog. If we add the categories in the menu bar or inside but then it is good for the user experience.

But it doesn’t mean that you can’t use this method later. So to add a category in WordPress from the Categories panel follow these steps:

    1. Login to your WordPress admin dashboard and find ‘Posts’ in the side menu bar.
    2. Follow the path: Posts>Categories
    3. Here you can find the text field for the name of the category for slug and a drop-down option to choose the parent category.
    4. Enter the name and slug will be automatically created the same as the name of your category.
    5. If this one is not a sub-category then keep the parent category none from the drop-down list.
    6. Enter the description of the category.
    7. Click on the Add New Category button.

When you click on add new category button the page will reload and you can see the added category on the right side in the categories list section.

But if you are not using the self-hosted version of WordPress then you don’t have permission to change the slug. On self-hosted WordPress, you have all the rights and you can change anything that you want.

Add categories from the edit post page

This method is basically used when we write a post or edit a post and want to categorize that post in a new or a subcategory.

For example, if you are writing this post or article and you have a category with the name of WordPress but you want to assign a new category or subcategory with the name of WordPress tutorial then this method you can use.

You don’t have to follow the previous process and you can simply add a new category from the same edit post page.

    1. WordPress Dashboard > Add New or Edit the post from All Posts
    2. Find Categories Panel on the right sidebar
    3. Click on +Add New Categories
    4. Enter the Name of the category and select the parent category if you want
    5. Click on Add New Category button

How to rename Categories in WordPress

With an organizational structure of WordPress, visitors can easily find content. You can easily categorize the posts and add tags and these can help you to create amazing structures that can help you to rank.

When you want to improve that user experience, you may need to rename the Categories. Categories name editing in WordPress is easy and simple.

Change only Name and Slug of Category

    1. WordPress Dashboard > Posts > Categories
    2. Hover the mouse on Category which you want to edit or rename
    3. Click on Quick Edit
    4. Rename and change the slug
    5. Click on Update Category button

If you want to change the description or want to change the parent category then follow the steps below.

    1. WordPress Dashboard > Posts > Categories
    2. Hover mouse on the Category, find Edit option, and click on it
    3. Change the Name, Slug, Parent Category and Description fields
    4. Click on Update Button

Note: For small changes don’t update the slug, because if you change the slug the related URL will be updated and it will affect the SEO. If you change the slug you have to redirect the URLs with 301 permanent redirections. You can find the 301 redirection solution in the article below.

How to Delete Category in WordPress

If you created or added an unwanted category in WordPress then you can easily delete that category in a few simple steps.

    1. WordPress Dashboard > Posts > Categories
    2. Select single or multiple categories from the list with check box
    3. Choose Delete from Bulk action dropdown
    4. Click on Apply

Redirect old Categories URL to updated URL

Url redirection is important if you don’t want to lose the ranking on the search engine result page.

If you are not redirecting those URLs to new URLs then it will affect your website, because when someone visits the page from the SERP ( Search Engine Result Page ) to your old URL then it will show a 404 error.

So, you need to redirect the old URL to the new one permanently, 301 redirections indicate to the search engine that you redirected the URL to the new one permanently and the old URL is no longer exists.
